SoBS Ilkeston group was established in 2007 by Eric Thwaites (non survivor volunteer) and was formally run by Gillian Irish (survivor, Trustee), Lyn Rabbit (volunteer, trustee) and Sue Preston (volunteer). We decided to arrange the meetings for the 4th Thursday of each month, the group continues to meet on the same day of the month to this day.
The meeting place is central to Ilkeston and the building is run by a local charity, which means the room hire cost goes back in a local charity therefore supporting the community.
The group has had many visitors during it’s 14 years of operation, people have travelled from Leicester, Loughborough, Uttoxeter, Lincoln and Sheffield. We have encouraged anyone who has wanted to volunteer to establish a support group in their own county. The group has an open door policy supporting people over the age of 18 who have been impacted by suicide.
The Ilkeston group has been supported by many local causes. In September 2014 the Ilkeston Lions supported us for £2000.
