Welcome to the Wokingham Group
The Wokingham SoBS group has been running since March 2014, so for 7 years now. It was the first group in Berkshire to open and we have members from all over Berkshire and some from Surrey.
I facilitate the group supported by Lynne and Roger. We have a new volunteer Adrian, who has joined us this year.
Richard, my son died in 2008 aged 20 and I had attended the Henley group prior to opening the Wokingham group where Suzanne, the facilitator, had supported me.
Three years ago one of our members, Marc, was undergoing treatment for cancer and wanted to walk with friends so we started a monthly SoBS walk in addition to the monthly SoBS meeting. Sadly Marc died but the walks continue and we have started them up again now that government restrictions have eased.
The Wokingham group meets on the first Wednesday of the month in central Wokingham and we have been using Zoom for our virtual sessions during the pandemic which took a bit of getting used to but it has been good to see each other throughout the year.
Some group members have worked with local councils and the coroner’s service, and The Bereaved by Suicide advocacy service has been set up which provides extra support for those bereaved by suicide across the region. We also have a voice on the Berkshire Suicide Prevention group.
I have made many wonderful friends whilst facilitating the group and I feel that it is the only good thing to have come out of Richard’s death. I know that the groups help and we do need more volunteers to support us in Wokingham to ensure that it’s there to help others in the future.
