Supporting the bereaved

This section will help you understand why people who have been bereaved by suicide sometimes feel isolated and how you can help them.

It can be difficult to talk about suicide and many people who have been bereaved feel alone and isolated at a time when they are hurting and vulnerable.  This happens for many reasons – sometimes people avoid them or do not know what to say.  Or they may struggle to share their own feelings, perhaps because are fearful themselves of what they are experiencing or because they do not want to upset people around them.

Getting support, perhaps involving several people such as family, friends, health professionals and organisations like ours is often an important part of helping people to know that what they are experiencing is normal, that they are not alone and offering them hope and confidence for the future.
